ALZHEIMER'S, DEMENTIA and HEAVY METALS by Dr. Nance MacLeod-Lutchin, DNM When I am asked to speak or write about dementia and Alzheimer's disease I must talk about heavy metals which are in every part of our environment and food. Brain tissue attracts heavy metals such as lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium, and others. When heavy metals appear in the brain they can interfere with your natural brain chemistry like reducing serotonin and dopamine.  Over time, this reduction will accelerate the onset of dementia or Alzheimer's and other brain related diseases. Aluminum is associated most with Alzheimer's because aluminum is found in very high levels in people's brain that have died of Alzheimer's. This evidence points to aluminum as a possible cause of Alzheimer's. However, even with this evidence there is a lot of debate about whether aluminum can cause Alzheimer's. One reason for this is that the Aluminum Industry is so powerful that it has excluded and campaigned against any reports that point to aluminum's involvement in dementia or Alzheimer's. The following are everyday products we all use that contain aluminum: antacids, aluminum foil, cooking pans, rice cookers, small oven trays, soft drink cans, various food cans, toothpaste, water, anti-perspirant, non-diary creamers, table salt, baking powder, flouride treatments, vaccines, many artificial sugars, processed foods and more. Other heavy metals also can come from the above list as well as air pollution, smoking, pesticides, fillings, etc. I personally do my best to stay away from all of the above. Having loss of memory and other mental abilities is not the result of aging as many of us tell ourselves. It is the result of poor diet and lifestyle and excess consumption of pollution and toxins. Here is how to minimize heavy metal damage. A diet rich in magnesium is recommended. Aluminum and other heavy metals absorption canbe decreased by magnesium because magnesium competes wit aluminum for absorption, not only in the intestines but also at the blood-brain barrier. Increase the consumption of unprocessed foods, raw cacao, cinnamon sticks, sprouted chia and flax, mucuna seed powder, seaweed, algae, raw vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds- all good sources of magnesium and other trace minerals. Also drinking a lemon and chlrophyll drink is helpful. Drink this every morning. Here's how to make this drink. Combine the juice of one lemon, 8oz of water and 2oz of chlorophyll. Adding super foods to your diet, eating plenty of fresh raw fruits and vegetables, drinking the chlorophyll lemon water and decreasing your use of the many products that have aluminum and other heavy metals in them will prevent the risk and stabilize or slow down dementia or Alzheimer's as well as other diseases often blamed on the aging process. We do not have to deteriorate with age. We can become stronger and healthier if we want to !
